Creamy Au Gratin Potato Recipe


This is an all time favorite side dish served with a beef roast or pork roast

6 medium russet potatoes, sliced into 1/4 inch slices
salt and pepper to taste
1/2 clove garlic
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon nutmeg
1/2 cups milk
1/2 pint of heavy cream
1/2 teaspoon nutmeg
1 1/2 cups shredded Cheddar cheese
If you find mixture is not thick enough before baking add a little flour while stirring:

*Preheat oven to 350 degrees
Do not wash the potatoes slices the starch helps thicken the cream
In a medium pan add the milk and cream bring to a boil; lower the heat add the sliced potatoes to coat them with the cream mixture, season with salt, ground pepper and nutmeg. Stir in the shredded cheese stirring constantly so mixture does not stick to the pan, remove pan from heat when cheese has melted;

Baking the Gratin prepare baking dish by rubbing the garlic on the bottom and sides of baking dish.
add the potato mixture and spread in baking dish evenly. Bake at 350 degrees for 40 minutes;
when you see tiny bubbles on the surface insert the tip of a sharp knife into the gratin to make
sure potatoes are done. To brown the top turn on broiler for 3-4 minutes.
